Magento! Say you’ve found that it makes a fairly tidy blanket until you wear your bathrobe backward.
You plan to produce the products you have cleverly called “The Snuggled,”… Or anything like that, and you can take your commodity to the primary and final frontier after many days and nights of labor: the internet.
You know that Magento is the most smart, sexy, easy-to-use eCommerce CMS platform out there, after the research dust has settled. (With you, we will accept it as true). And your snuggled one is tied to the glory of Magento.
But who’s going to build your site for Magento? You get (gasp!) 6 million results when you do a Google search for “Magento developer,”! Does the primary technology company just select one on the list? Do you get quotes from them all and pick the cheapest one? Does one name the one on Facebook with the biggest friends? Your dad is really sweet about computers. He would be able to roll in the hay….
It’s always scarier to choose a Magento Development Services than a Spanish cucumber, so we’ve put together a few tips to pick a team to really sing and get your Snuggled on the web map to shape your eCommerce site, or whatever your product may be.
1.) Look for a partner in Magento
The Magento Commerce website should be a good place to start your quest. They need an excellent database of Silver and Gold-level partners, which means they need access to support, facilities, extensions, forums, and other real smart individuals for Magento who can help make the project run smoothly. When selecting a developer, keep the reach of your project in mind. You would not need a Gold-level partner if you’re a small company seeking to plug a Snuggled using the free Community edition of Magento. No one has a bazooka to kill a rabbit.
If, however, you have an outsized catalog, complicated business rules or some alignment with your rear systems and plan to use Magento Professional or Enterprise, you would probably need a Magento partner at the Silver or Gold level with the massive guns needed to knock out your project.
What’s the difference between partners in Silver and Gold? It is normally the size of the company and thus the offering of services rendered. You almost definitely don’t need to call a Gold partner if you have a 5K budget. However, whether you’re ready to get a bucket of hours for growth or maintenance, certain businesses can fight small projects.
2.) Inspect the Magento Portfolio of Your Developer
Once you’ve noticed a few Magento developers that you’re willing to figure out, search their portfolio. Some businesses, like us, call it “Work,” some businesses call it “Featured Websites,” and some businesses might call it “Our Clients.” The goal is to make it easy for you to search for an outstanding Magento developer with the things they’ve created.

If your account manager is a little dodgy, or your designer is neurotic, during a panic, it can turn the operation into a nightmare. But you will have a lot better production experience once you work with good people that you like, and you will definitely get a much better product in the end.
4.) Summon References
But now that you’ve narrowed it down to a few enterprises, invite referrals from customers of the Magento Company. You will almost definitely not hire an employee based solely on the resume they submitted. Even Sarah Palin may apply as a rocket scientist for a job… Or, for that matter, the president. That doesn’t mean she should be recruited by NASA to manage mission control.
Companies understand this, and they will have no trouble supplying you with references. The last item you would want is to be a research project for an organization that has no idea how Magento functions or how to deal with the program’s complexities.
We’ve supported some customers who have had this encounter with another developer, sadly, and it can get ugly. You want a company that has a wide variety of Magento website development experience, and they are not afraid to share those references with you.
5.) Confirm your product and existing market practices to explain
If you are a new company or you are restoring an existing Magento eCommerce website, confirm that your developer knows what you want and, most importantly, they have agreed that they will do what you want. Does one have to incorporate an ERP system with it? Does one need resources for program optimization? Are custom extensions needed beyond the reach of the standard Magento owl?
Chances are, while you’re only selling a bathrobe that you’ve cleverly disguised as a blanket, there are probably some special features that you’d like to have on your site. Features for personalized check-out, changing product pictures, fancy color swatches.
Whatever it is, just confirm that your developer understands what you have in mind and that they can deliver on those things that you really can’t do without. Explaining how your company functions on a day-to-day basis will help your developer come up with an idea and give you some reassurance that the right tech guys have been selected.
6.) Assess the Website of the Developer
You certainly don’t need to settle for a business whose website appears to have been founded in 1997. While those were legendary times in the history of eCommerce, you would prefer a business that has a new outlook and continues to keep up with current trends. If, because Limp Basket was cool, the developer’s site has not been updated, you should certainly remember the red flag.
7.) Price vs. Output
If you choose the creator of Magento, confine your mind: you get what you buy. We all know that this is a cliché, but we’ve seen plenty of it. Human Element has had many customers coming to us from other developers with half-finished projects that just went out of control because their previous developer did not understand.
What they were doing with Magento, compromised the project, and could not finish it. Bear in mind that the most cost-effective developer is never the cheapest, and you will often find yourself paying loads more to fix something than designing it properly for a touch more in the first place.
That doesn’t mean that you would like to fly to urge a working Magento site with the foremost expensive developer, but it does mean that you should look carefully at what each company offers in their quote. Confirm all the characteristics you want are included in the proposal, which you have spelled out functions that are important to your business.
