Early Life/Family Background
Austin Coleman was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1877. His father was a Yale professor and his mother wrote fiction for the Saturday Evening Post and other magazines. He had two siblings, Arthur Coleman Jr. (1884–1946), who became an international banker; and Elsie Lathrop (1890–1942), who became a writer and editor of children’s books at Harper & Brothers Publishers.
Their family was very supportive of Austin’s education as he studied at Dartmouth College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1902 before entering law school at Columbia University where he earned his law degree in 1905.[2]
College Years at Yale University
Austin was a member of the Yale football team and was named an All-American in both 1942 and 1943. In baseball, he played second base and batted .305 for his career.
In addition to playing on the field, Austin also rowed for Yale’s crew team during his college years—and won all-American honors at that sport as well!
Life after college, and before World War I
After graduation, Austin Coleman worked for the Boston Braves as a coach and scout. He was also a member of the Yale Club of New York, the Yale Club of Boston, and the Yale Club of Philadelphia.
